CZERNIN PALACE

The Czernin Palace in Hradčany, one of the most significant pieces of work of early Baroque architecture in the Czech Republic, was built in the last third of the 17th Century as a project by Francesco Caratti. The whole palace complex is listed including its valuable reconstruction and extension from the 1930s designed by Pavel Janák, which included a garden and a late Baroque pavilion. Nowadays, it houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Studio acht, in collaboration with the art historian Mojmír Horyna and architect Pavel Kupka were responsible for the monument restoration of ca 27,000m2 of façades – Baroque and modern.
The surroundings were also part of the project needing remediation, securing and restoration. The main outcome was a monochromatic design of the façade of the main building. This design allows its refined architecture and thoughtful division to stand out. Rehabilitation of period colour design of the garden pavilion (late 18th Century) was another outcome.

Due to the importance of this cultural monument, throughout the whole process representatives of the National Heritage Institute were regularly consulted.
“…Engineers from the architectural Studio acht appreciated the significance and monumental value of this listed building and contributed to the quality result of the restoration. Thanks to this, perennial preparations were paid off in achieving a perfect result,” (Press Release from National Heritage Institute 25.11.2014: Ondřej Šefců, Principal of the Nation Heritage Prague regional office)
