RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH OF ST WENCESLAS IN CHVOJÍNEK

The project aims to restore the medieval Church of St Wenceslas in Chvojínek. This picturesque rural church stands on a gentle rise, bordered by meadows to the south and west, while the northeastern side connects directly to the village. The building likely dates to the last quarter of the 13th century, although written records mention it only from the 14th century. More precise dating may be provided by the ongoing architectural and historical survey. Today, the church is protected as a heritage-listed building. The uniqueness of the structure lies in its authentically preserved layers of historical development.
Over centuries, the church was adapted and furnished according to the modest means of the local parish. Older elements were not replaced but gradually complemented by newer interventions. Thanks to this careful, incremental approach, the building has retained an exceptionally valuable record of its historical development.

A significant reconstruction took place in the 1970s. Its authors were likely the last to see certain historical traces that disappeared during the works. Apart from fragmentary notes, period documentation has not been found; the design therefore builds upon the church’s reconstructed appearance from that time and respects it, as available references suggest it was based on authentic findings. The restoration seeks to ensure that the church, once repaired, presents itself as a unified and dignified whole. The intention is neither to highlight nor suppress individual historical layers, but to preserve them as a natural part of the building’s identity. Their mutual interplay—reflecting at times almost picturesque utilitarianism and the practical, frugal thinking of past generations—represents one of the church’s most significant values.
Given the immediate proximity of the historic cemetery, earthworks will be limited to the necessary minimum. All excavations will be carried out manually and under professional archaeological supervision.

The project also includes repairs to the roof above the main nave. The survey revealed several severely damaged tie beams in the roof truss, whose restoration requires the temporary removal of the sanctus turret with its bell frame. Due to the degradation of its supporting structure, the turret has already become visibly tilted, making its dismantling an essential step toward ensuring the long‑term stability and safety of the entire building.
