COMPETITION: DESIGN OF A HIGH SPEED RAIL BRIDGE NEAR VELKÉ MEZIŘÍČÍ

We took part in an architectural and structural competition for a new high‑speed rail bridge near Velké Meziříčí. In collaboration with the engineering firm Stráský, Hustý a partneři, we developed a proposal that was awarded second place.

The proposed bridge spans the picturesque valley of the Oslava River at a height of approximately 45 metres above the water level. It is located within sight of the motorway viaduct and two elegant masonry railway arch bridges built in the early days of railway construction. Our aim was to create a structure that would not compete with these historic arches, while offering a contemporary and landscape‑sensitive solution. The new bridge respects these historic elements without imitating them. Its arched silhouette is defined by a pure geometric form with straight piers, minimising visual interference with views of the older bridges.

The overall concept protects the integrity of the area. The high‑speed line is integrated into existing paths and service routes, introducing only minimal new corridors so that the valley remains open to natural movement of wildlife and people. Rather than planting continuous vegetation belts—which would accentuate the linearity of the track and attract birds to hazardous areas—we propose solitary trees and small clusters that restore traditional landscape features and provide natural habitats.

Natural migration routes are maintained between the bridge piers along the riverbanks, supported by long‑term access for maintenance. We also recommend using the area around the planned tunnel and overpass as an additional crossing point for wildlife and for future cycling routes, aligning transport needs with ecological permeability.
