COMPETITION: MOTORWAY BRIDGE OVER THE VLTAVA RIVER (D0, SUCHDOL – BŘEZINĚVES)

We took part in an architectural competition for a new motorway bridge over the Vltava River in the Suchdol – Bohnice section. In cooperation with the engineering firm Stráský, Hustý and Partners, we developed a design that was awarded first place. The jury appreciated that our proposal disrupts the valuable landscape scenery the least, as it preserves clear views and movement along the river. The bridge deck is suspended from two inclined pylons, whose foundations are located above the protected slopes behind natural landmarks, not in the riverbed. Even the construction of the bridge itself would practically not affect the protected area, as an incremental launching method with access only via the deck is envisaged.

According to the jury, our proposal succeeded in terms of the overall architectural and technical solution of both the bridge and its approaches. The design has the least construction impact on protected areas, as it does not require massive bridge piers on the banks of the Vltava. At the same time, it disrupts the overall character of the Vltava Valley landscape the least, as it visually intrudes minimally into the deeply cut river valley and does not compete with the phenomenon of the steep slopes of the Vltava canyon. When viewed from numerous vantage points into the valley, the silhouette of the bridge naturally follows the horizon and mirrors its dynamic lines.

As part of this evaluation criterion, the jury also positively assessed the elegant and technically distinctive solution of the three-span bridge structure. The unobstructed space beneath the bridge, free from massive piers, was considered a positive contribution both architecturally and in terms of the impact on the significant and frequently visited landscape feature of the Vltava Valley. Thanks to the absence of piers in the riverbed, our design is also the only one that allows the seamless construction of the planned A1 cycle path on the left bank of the river.

Although the cost of the bridge increases with span length, it can be responsibly stated that this is an economically advantageous solution. This is because it eliminates the need for road diversions, traffic restrictions, and deterioration of quality of life around supports. Considering the entire life cycle of the structure, our design comes out best. The proposed solution has minimal environmental impact both during construction and in operation. The jury appreciated that the design does not require temporary land occupation or construction facilities in the valley, the valley will not be affected by noise and dust, and there will only be acceptable interventions in the protected areas. According to the proposal, the bridge structure should be constructed using a balanced cantilever method from both abutments toward the center of the bridge without restricting the space below.

Technical solution: The 560-meter-long bridge with a main span of 421 meters consists of two interconnected box girders suspended from two inclined pylons. Each motorway carriageway runs on a separate girder. The pylons and hangers are located along the motorway axis. Pedestrian and cyclist paths are separated and placed on the outer sides of the box girders.
