ERNESTINUM PŘÍBRAM

Chateau Ernestium stands in the historic center of Příbram. It is one of the oldest architectural monuments of the region. Its significance – thanks to its founder, Archbishop Arnošt from Pardubice – a European medieval intellectual – reaches to at least the central European context.

Throughout the centuries, Arnošt’s original gothic castle has been remodelled, reaching the shape of a four-wing three-storey building with a rectangular inner courtyard.

The project had to meet the many requirements necessary for the reconstruction of a historical building.

From the investors’ point of view, the main focus was on modifications needed for the full functionality of the municipal and cultural institutions based at the chateau. Besides the town information center, Fr. Drtikol’s art gallery and a regional museum, a ceremonial hall is located on the ground floor of the chateau. The reconstruction of this hall and its connection to the courtyard was intended to create a new meeting space suitable for a wide range of cultural events, enabled by a new glass roof over the courtyard. The roof glides over the edges of the surrounding roofs and is designed with a stained-glass graphic, the lines represented by steel profiles supporting the glass panes.

Following this came monument restoration of the interior and exterior, as required by building conservationists. The restoration consisted mainly of considerate remedial work to the façades, returning them to their late classicism look, combined with the post-cubism façades of the latest extension from the 1920s. After centuries, this extension closed the courtyard with its northern wing.

The complete project proposal is currently waiting for the results of an application for a financial grant from European funds.
