FAJT HILL LOOKOUT TOWER

The lookout tower is located on the northeast outskirts of Velké Meziříčí at the top of a 557-meter-tall hill called, ‘Fajtův kopec’. The lookout tower offers more than just a view of the town – you can also see the picturesque landscape of Českomoravská vrchovina, Žďárské vrchy to the northwest and Drahanská vrchovina to the east, it is also possible to see the cooling towers of Dukovany located 50 km away. With good weather conditions, you may even see the Austria.

The tower has become a significant feature of its wider surroundings - it is well visible from the D1 highway (142 km) that stretches past it. The tower is situated at the very top of the hill near the upper station of a ski lift. The ski lift is part of the ski resort, the initiator of a process that after several years of preparation was successfully completed in 2015.

The lookout tower is formed of two separately functioning units; a single storey base with a visitor centre, tourist and sports rental, toilets and the technical facilities for the ski lift. This space is laid out very simply and effectively. The base also serves as a boarding platform for the lookout tower itself.
Above this is the tower, which has been designed using parametric design and as a result has a matchless architectural expression. The steel structure is made of two triads of pillars spinning in opposite directions to create a load bearing core. Ten flights of stairs are placed within this steel structure. Together with another triad of pillars placed inside the staircase, spatial rigidity for the 36m tall tower is achieved. All the pillars are connected at the top with a ring, and at a height of 32.4m, there is an observation deck.
